The 4 Scales

The E - I Scale

WHERE DO YOU PREFER TO FOCUS YOUR ATTENTION?
WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR ENERGY?

E - Extraversion - (Outer world of people and external events)

  • attuned to external environment
  • prefer to communicate by talking
  • learn best through doing or discussing
  • breadth of interests
  • tend to speak first, reflect later
  • sociable and expressive
  • take initiative in work and relationships
  • find listening more difficult than talking
  • like going to parties and prefer to talk with many people instead of a few
  • you are energized by being with people, things, etc. in the outer world

I - Introversion - (Inner world of ideas and experiences)

  • drawn to their inner worlds
  • prefer to communicate by writing
  • learn best by reflection, mental "practice"
  • depth of interests
  • tend to reflect before acting or speaking
  • private and contained
  • focus readily
  • are perceived as a "good listener" but feel that others take advantage of you
  • like to share special occasions with just one person or perhaps a few close friends
  • after spending time in the outer world you may need time by yourself to re-energize

The S - N Scale

HOW DO YOU TAKE IN INFORMATION, FIND OUT ABOUT THINGS?

S - Sensing - (Take in information through 5 senses)

  • focus on what is real and actual
  • value practical applications
  • factual and concrete, notice details
  • observe and remember sequentially
  • present-orientated
  • want information step-by-step
  • trust experience
  • hears things literally

N - Intuition - (Take in information by seeing the relationship and connection between facts)

  • focus on "big picture", possibilities
  • value imaginative insight
  • abstract and theoretical
  • see patterns and meaning in facts
  • future-orientated
  • jump around, leap in anywhere
  • trust inspiration
  • hears things figuratively

The T - F Scale

HOW DO YOU MAKE DECISIONS?

T - Thinking - (Tend to look at the logical consequences of a choice or action)

  • analytical
  • logical problem-solvers
  • use cause-and -effect reasoning
  • tough-minded
  • strive for impersonal, objective truth
  • reasonable
  • fair
  • seek objective clarity

F - Feeling - (Tend to consider what is important to them and to other people)

  • sympathetic
  • assess impact on people

  • strive for harmony and individual validation
  • compassionate

  • tend to take things personally

The J - P Scale

HOW DO YOU ORIENT TOWARD THE OUTER WORLD?

J - Judging - (Tend to live life in a planned, orderly way, wanting to regulate and control life)

  • like closure--to have things decided
  • avoid last-minute stresses

P - Perceiving - (Tend to live in a flexible, spontaneous way, seeking to experience and understand, rather than control it)

  • like things loose and open to change
  • feel energized by last-minute pressures
